Belmont Hills Golf Club is a semi-private resort course that offers a demanding round of golf on pristine, intensely bunkered, multi-tiered U.S.G.A. greens overlooking Bermuda's famous turquoise blue sea. Professional course designer Algie M. Pulley Jr. moved mountains to design the Belmont Hills course back in 2002. Literally. The veteran Californian architect found an existing layout that was largely featureless. But after the most extensive golf course rebuilding project Bermuda has ever seen, a new topography emerged. Today, every one of the 6,100 yards of intense bunkering, multi-tiered greens and slender fairways will thoroughly test your shot-making abilities.
Pulley created a magnificent, contoured layout that maximises the golfer's experience while showcasing the Island's captivating beauty. Panoramic views of Hamilton Harbour and the Great Sound provide the backdrop for some of the finest 18 holes on the Island. Belmont Hills' greens are built to U.S.G.A. standards and sprigged, naturally enough, with Tiff Eagle Bermuda Grass. The fairways feature 419 Bermuda Grass to provide the best possible playing surface. And although Bermuda has its fair share of sand, Belmont Hills' bunkers hold the same sand Master's players try to avoid at Augusta National.
Water hazards come in to play on several holes, which is unusual for a Bermudian course. (Bermuda doesn't have any natural creeks or rivers and only a handful of freshwater ponds). Two large man-made ponds complement the dramatic rolling landscape. An automatic irrigation system keeps tees, fairways and greens, including Bermuda's only double green (14,000 square feet), in peak condition. Hundreds of trees have been planted or relocated to define the fairways and to increase safety. |

In the early 1900s, Charles Blair Macdonald, foremost golf architect in the United States, hankered for an opportunity to create one of his legendary courses overseas. When Furness Withy Steamship Company approached him about designing a golf course and a hotel on Bermuda to expand its tourism, he leapt at the chance. In 1919, Furness Withy set sail to Bermuda with Macdonald and Charles Wetmore, a leading architect of hotels. After careful analysis of the island, the two architects chose Tucker Town as the ideal venue, and 600 acres there were eventually secured. Despite numerous design and construction challenges posed by the terrain, the course was completed on December 15th, 1921. It was heralded by Macdonald as one of his greatest achievements, and he boasted of the "beauty, charm and excellence of the links".
Today, the course remains loyal to its noble beginnings. There have been gentle enhancements over time, and the clubhouse was completely revamped in the 1980s to enhance its comfort and refinement. The dedication to excellence, however, and the unwavering devotion of its members, remains as true today as the day the club came to be. This is a club founded on courage, conviction, comradery, and a pure love of the sport of golf. This is the heritage of the Mid Ocean Club, and this is its future. |

Port Royal opened for play in 1970. The architect, world renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr., has been quoted as saying that Port Royal was his finest design outside of mainland United States. As such, this facility has pedigree, prestige and is an asset Bermuda can be proud of. The intended renovations at Port Royal will fit into the Ministry of Tourism's stated policy of promoting Bermuda as a Golf and Spa resort.
At 37 years old, the fabric of the course, (tees, fairways, bunkers and greens) will undertake a major renovation to improve its playability. The layout of the course will be lengthened from 6561yards to 6757 yards. The new layout will have little change as far as design is concerned apart from two holes number 12 and 13 which will be reversed to a par 4 and 3 respectively. Port Royal is open to resident and non resident play - its appeal is therefore wide ranging. While the maintenance has been upheld throughout the years with diligence and skill, the standard of tees, fairways and greens cannot be materially improved without the revamped program.
The plan seeks to achieve: - The course will close January 2nd, 2008, and scheduled to reopen January 2009.
- Installation of reverse osmosis plants and course irrigation throughout.
- The course will be lengthened to 6757 yards with several new tees.
- All tees and greens will be rebuilt and all bunkers will be redesigned.
- Greens will be re-turfed with Tifeagle grass.
- Tee boxes and greens surround will have Bermuda 419 grass.
- Two holes, 12 and 13 have been rerouted.

In its 2005 World's Best Golf Resorts issue, Travel + Leisure Golf's readers placed the club in the top three in categories of Best Golf Resort and Best Restaurants in the Caribbean. And Brian Kendall of The Globe and Mail wrote "Mid Ocean has reigned supreme in Bermuda for 80 years. But a total redesign of nearby Tucker's Point Golf Club...has made it the equal in challenge and beauty of its better-known neighbour."
The Golf Clubhouse serves as the centrepiece of this amenity-rich private club, resort and residential community. The Clubhouse reflects traditional Bermudian architecture and includes the Grille Room and Lounge, Dining Room and Board Room, the Golf Pro Shop, locker rooms and ladies' lounge. |
