Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club is located along the Atlantic coastline on the northwestern point of Hilton Head Island on the Port Royal Plantation along with the luxurious oceanfront Westin Resort (The Westin Resort, Hilton Head Island). In addition to being praised for its unrivaled golf, it is also well known as a world-class tennis destination. In 1997, Port Royal was recognized as a "Silver Medal Resort" by Golf Magazine for its three spectacular 18-hole golf courses: The Barony, Planter's Row, and Robber's Row.

The course designers are George W. Cobb, Willard C. Byrd and Pete Dye. From the tee, many of the holes on Barony appear to be relatively open. But as you approach the green, the real challenge of the course becomes clear. The greens are small and protected by deep bunkers and Bermuda rough, demanding a deft touch with the medium and short irons. Indeed, this is a course where accuracy, not length, is paramount.

Best summed up by one of the architects himself, " Challenging yet very playable, Hilton Head National takes its place near the top of the great golf courses of Hilton Head. The course sums up my design philosophy: minimal hazards in the line of play; slightly undulating rather than difficult greens; multiple tees for variety; bunkering that allows both professionals and amateurs equal opportunities."

Port Royal Golf Club, cuddled by the Atlantic coastline, is located on the northwestern point of Hilton Head Island, named one of the "Top 75 U.S. Golf Resorts" by Golf Digest Magazine. The Club is situated in the Port Royal Plantation along with the luxurious oceanfront Westin Resort. In addition to being praised for its unrivaled golf experience, it is also well-known as a world-class tennis destination.

Planter's Row was designed by Willard Byrd and built in 1984. This 18-hole course was the Plantation's third course and played host to the Hilton Head Seniors International Golf Tournament, a former Champions TOUR event. This course offers a different look from its sister courses, with rolling, tree-lined fairways in a park-like setting. Water comes into play on several holes, and its large and undulating greens require a skilled touch with the putter.

Redesigned by world famous architect Pete Dye in 1994, this scenic course is cut through beautiful stands of magnolias and live oaks. Rich in history, Robber's Row is set atop former Civil War grounds on the marsh side of the plantation and features historical markers on several holes describing events relevant to the area. Although tee-shot landing areas are quite generous, approach shots require accuracy to the well-bunkered greens.

Shipyard Golf Club ($$)

Adding to the beauty and character of the 27-holes of championship golf are many lagoons and ponds, which must be negotiated if you are to play to your handicap. The three courses offer four tee positions to accommodate all levels of play, and there are ample risk and reward situations to allow optimal scoring opportunities. Accurate tee shots and well-measured approaches are a must on this championship course. The greens are large and well bunkered, and their undulating surfaces demand a delicate, yet determined touch.

Two of the three inter-connecting nines are combined for a unique and challenging 18-hole round. The original Clipper and Galleon courses create an exciting combination of long fairways and perilous hazards, while the Brigantine course winds its way around lagoons and breathtaking terrain.
